The IWC provides Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) in a welcoming environment, facilitated by certified LINC instructors.

Our LINC program offers classes for levels 1 to 7 and Literacy at three locations in Hamilton. Full-time, part-time and evening classes are available. Day-time classes include free services for children aged six months to five years. Bus tickets may be available for those who qualify.

Classes are available for men and women, as well as women-only.

Enrollment is continuous. There is no start or end date. It takes 4-12 months to complete the program.

Who can attend LINC classes?

You must be:

  • over the age of 18;
  • a permanent resident or conventional refugee (or your application for Permanent Residency is being processed)

Canadian citizens, refugee claimants and temporary residents (such as foreign students, foreign workers and visitors) are NOT eligible for LINC.

{ LINC } Program Details

We offer a variety of LINC classes based on your existing knowledge of the English language. Enrolling in our LINC classes will help you with all your communication needs, but you will also learn about Canadian laws, health care, society, job market, and many things that are important for life in Canada.

First Steps in English | Literacy - Pre-Foundation (PRE-FL), Foundation (FL)

  • Write the alphabet and basic words
  • Match words and pictures
  • Read simple stories
  • Learn conversations and vocabulary for work

Face to face English | CLB 1, 1L or CLB 1, 2, 2L

  • Simple emails, forms & notes
  • Basic grammar structure
  • Vocabulary for short, informal conversations at work

Build and use English | CLB 2, 2L, 3, 3L

  • Greetings and introductions at work
  • Complete forms
  • Read and write short sentences for work

Learn, Work, Live English | CLB 3, 3L, 4, 4L

  • Interviews and formal introductions for work
  • Write notes and emails for work
  • Create simple resumes
  • Give and follow directions

English in Action | CLB 4, 4L, 5

  • Make simple phone calls
  • Internet search skills
  • Conversations and discussions
  • Follow simple medical instructions

Intensive Communication For Work | CLB 4, 5, 6

  • Write emails, business letters and memos
  • Formal workplace telephone skills
  • Work on soft skills
  • Advanced grammar for listening and speaking at work
  • Use Microsoft Office
  • Create cover letter, resume, and video resume

Academic and Business English | CLB 5, 6, 7

  • Business correspondence
  • Presentations and debates for work
  • Research skills and paragraph structure
