1. Hussen is Canada’s first Immigration Minister to have lived experience as a refugee.

2. Hussen came to Canada from Somalia at 16 years old.

3. He went to high school in Hamilton.

4. He joined track and field and cross country which helped him find belonging in a new country.

5. After graduating, he moved to Regent Park, Toronto, to live with his brother.

6. He was not eligible for student loans, so paid his own way through university at a job pumping gas.

7. His commute to the job? Two hours.

8. After graduating law school, he worked as an Immigration Lawyer.

9. He got his first job in politics while looking to volunteer with his local MPP.

10. He finds inspiration from his mother and brother, who both encouraged him to take education very seriously and make the most of opportunities in Canada.
