Facing Fears While Finding Belonging: Dina's Story

When Dina and her family arrived in Canada nearly two years ago, her vision was clear: to build a better future for her children.

Originally from Egypt, Dina holds a degree in Genetic Engineering and brought a strong background working in procurement and management.

Dina and her family first settled in the prairies, then spent time in Central Ontario as they adjusted to life in a new country. Eventually, they found their new home in Hamilton.

For many newcomers, adjusting to life in a new city can bring on a mix of emotions. When she first arrived in Hamilton, Dina expressed feeling disconnected and asked herself “Where am I?”. She was scared to go out and hesitant to communicate with people. But over time, Dina began reaching out to the local community.

After being referred to IWC, Dina said that she felt welcomed and began to feel a sense of belonging. Working with our Employment team, Dina decided to take the leap and join IWC’s WorkLink program.

Over six weeks, she learned language for the hospitality industry, earned certifications and grew her network. Most importantly, Dina faced her fears and began seeing positive changes.

She developed friendships, communicated and found her place in the community. At her WorkLink graduation, Dina gave her first-ever public presentation on Egyptian culture and how it relates to hospitality. This was yet another fear she courageously faced and overcame.

Dina’s journey with IWC continued. After completing the WorkLink program, she stayed connected to the organization.

With her optimistic attitude and determination to keep moving forward, Dina completed a Cricut design course with her son which opened new doors of opportunity.

Today, Dina is now the facilitator of IWC’s SheMakes program where she teaches newcomer women how to start their own creative business using Cricut tools while creating a sense of belonging she once searched for.
