Banking on Success

How IWC and RBC are Supporting Newcomer Career Growth

Mentorship is a powerful tool for advancing professional growth. In May 2024, the Immigrants Working Centre (IWC) partnered with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to demonstrate the true impact of mentorship by providing newcomers with support to overcome barriers to employment through an engaging mentorship program.

The partnership aimed to connect IWC clients with professionals in the banking industry, supporting them in developing their strategic thinking skills and equipping them with the tools necessary to succeed in the Canadian banking sector. Through bi-weekly sessions, participants gained detailed insights into the banking industry, explored various career opportunities and received practical advice on meeting the qualifications required for different roles. Additionally, personalized one-on-one sessions were held to address each participant’s unique needs. This support has been instrumental in helping many newcomers build a clearer path toward successful careers in banking.

How the IWC & RBC Partnership Began

When asked about how the partnership came to be, Elham Bakri, Industry Engagement Coordinator at IWC, explained that the partnership felt like a natural fit. She mentioned that the collaboration came from a shared commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of emerging talents in the industry.

Elham added “Through mutual connections and a series of strategic discussions, it became clear that RBC’s dedication to mentorship, community engagement, and corporate responsibility aligned perfectly with our mission.”

Sara Geday, Newcomer Strategist at RBC, spoke on her motivation for getting involved in this initiative. “As a newcomer myself I wished I had the guidance and help needed to better understand the Canadian bank and financial system and what it takes to work in the banking industries. It could have saved me years of trial and error.”

Sara also highlighted the most rewarding aspects of this initiative for her and her team. Beyond witnessing clients’ growth, she expressed “…the difference I noticed in their resumes, mock interviews and of course [having] some of our participants land jobs has been very rewarding.”

Positive Outcomes from the Program

IWC is immensely grateful for RBC’s role in this initiative. This partnership has provided IWC clients with access to RBC’s extensive networks and a valuable opportunity to build lasting connections beyond the mentoring sessions. The team is thrilled to see the positive impact of this effort. Participants are progressing with confidence, some of whom are already working with RBC and many who are preparing to get their professional licensing.

RBC’s partnership exemplifies a shared vision of empowering individuals and creating opportunities for all. We are honoured to partner with an organization that values and actively supports the integration of talented newcomers into our community.

Special thanks to Sara Geday, Newcomer Strategist; Hyelnaya Wurant, Newcomer Advisor for planning and hosting the closing session at the Heritage Centre, and to the team of Branch Managers and Assistant Branch Managers who participated in the panel: Heather Roberts, Huy Nguyen, Ella Decle and Kay Henry.
