Arriving in Canada in the spring of 2025, Zena shares that she remembers feeling afraid. Originally from Iraq, she made the brave step toward a fresh start and moved to Canada seeking to change her life. She knew she would be facing a new beginning in a completely new culture and environment.
With her daughter reaching the completion of her studies, Zena followed in her footsteps and joined IWC’s WorkLink program. Within just a few months since arriving in Canada, she found herself in the classroom enrolled in IWC’s WorkLink course for careers in hospitality. This was the first time Zena had taken a course in 26 years, since earning her degree in accounting.
Naturally, being in a new country surrounded by unfamiliar faces, Zena felt shy and hesitant communicating with her fellow learners. She practiced some English with her children before arriving to Canada but adjusting to a new culture brought on new challenges. With the encouragement from her WorkLink instructor, Hayam, Zena began to step out of her comfort zone and practice her English with confidence.
As the course progressed, Zena began feeling happier and more connected. She formed relationships with her fellow learners and together they found a sense of belonging and mutual support both inside and outside of the classroom. One of Zena’s proudest achievements was passing her Food Handler’s exam on her first try. This was a significant accomplishment for her and proof she could succeed.
“I’m very happy, I think inside, something changed.”
- Zena, Particpant of IWC's WorkLink Program
One her classmates described Zena as the “mother of the class”, highlighting her genuine care for others. Zena says that since the beginning of the course, she noticed positive shifts.
Since arriving in Canada, Zena has been able to overcome one of the biggest obstacles many newcomers face: finding safety and support in her community. Through her own determination and the desire for change, she discovered both confidence and community while adjusting to life in a new country.
Zena’s transformation in a short amount of time reminds us of the power of community and how it can bring hope and belonging. Reminded of her own journey, Zena’s advice to fellow newcomers is to reach out to local organizations where they can also find support and connection.
